Before coming to BYU, I asked a friend casually “Hey Ashley, are we allowed to wear short shorts or skirts with leggings under them at BYU?” In return, she casually responded, “I’m not sure, but some people do sometimes.” Now, let’s face it. We’ve all seen it: girls wearing short jean skirts with the black leggings that extend to the middle of their calves. A fashion statement? Sure, why not. I must admit that even I, a few years back, desperately wanted a short jean skirt so that I could follow the crowd. However, if I wanted to attend my dream school, I would most definitely need to change my attitude.

As students at BYU, we all signed the honor code, which states that “[d]resses, skirts, and shorts must be knee length or longer.” Something that must be understood is that no matter what is worn underneath these items of clothing, they do not comply with the dress code if they are shorter than knee length. Tight leggings make no difference. The honor code also states that “[c]lothing is inappropriate when it is…form fitting.” Think about it: tight leggings definitely falls under the category of form fitting. Two immodest items of clothing cannot make an item of clothing more modest.

I really like your final point, "Two immodest items of clothing cannot make an item of clothing more modest." Good job of establishing a kairos as fashion is always on the mind of BYU females! It would make your paper stronger if you set up your ethos differently. You discredited yourself when you said you asked a friend if you were allowed to wear an article of clothing. It makes you sound like you are a newbie to modesty and the honor code. You need to introduce your paper in a way that makes it sound like modesty and the honor code is important to you and why you know them so well. You could still use a personal experience; just make it sound like you have more experience and knowledge.
