Fight the "15"

All college students dread the “freshman 15”. If you are a freshman, you are scared to gain it; if you are older you are fighting to loose it. As a freshman at Brigham Young University and living in Helaman Halls for my seconded semester, I have personally experienced the struggle with the possibility and have tried hard to escape it. Thus far, I have succeeded in my attempts, but it has come through extreme self-discipline. The food choices and meal plans, especially at Helaman Halls, encourages weight gain in freshmen students.

The Helaman Halls hot spot is Cosmo’s Connection. This is a small convenience store, ice cream shop, and grill. As one walks in, they are met head on with a large selection of self-serve bulk candy, every candy bar imaginable and shelves packed with sugary and salty snacks. The grill has many delicious and greasy foods to choose from; there is the traditional hamburger and all the variations of it, fried chicken sandwiches, corn dogs, and quesadillas. Ice cream cones are available as well as a large variety of milkshake flavors. This is a great place to come to pick up a few snacks and many visit for a meal every once in a while, but to depend on this place to provide healthy sustenance is not a possibility. This is the only food source available in the late hours of the evening and oftentimes that is when students are returning home from studying. It is unhealthy to eat the food provided here on a regular basis and that is a problem that the residents here face. Cosmo’s needs to change their ways in order for residents to save their weights!

Well said! I don’t live in the dorms, but I have visited friends who do live there. To say the least I was not impressed with the food selection. The dining services should reread the Word of Wisdom and try to make it easier for younger students to making healthy dining selections. Freshmen living away from home for the first time shouldn’t be trusted to make good decisions for their health. I mean, they should, but they just don’t.

wow I love your topic, it sounds very similar to mine! I swear I wrote mine before I read yours. This just shows how important it is for students to have better opportunities for making healthy choices.

I was worried about this also when coming to college. I guess not living in the dorms helped me a lot with this problem. I also feel that self discipline is the key to not gaining the freshmen 15!!!
