Snowboard, $ 300. Season pass to Park City, $ 400. Time spent snowboarding with friends during spring break? Zero. For some places fun is allowed, for everywhere else there is BYU. I guess this makes sense, given that our Christmas break was ridiculously long. I mean, heaven forbid our family-oriented religious institution give us more than two weeks to celebrate the birth of Jesus and to be with our families. But I figure it all balances with our one whole day of Easter break. I know Martin Luther King was a great guy and all, but does he really deserve to be given the same amount of time as the resurrection! Hardworking BYU students warrant more than just a day off here and there. If drinking and partying are the issues, than the administration has clearly misjudged the quality of their students. It is probably safe to bet that if there was a spring break, the biggest party a Y student would be attending would be a stake dance. Other than students getting wasted on Mountain Dew, the risks involved with a spring break are minimal. I’m not asking for anything crazy, like unblocking youtube; I just want a week to shred.

it is very possible that the biggest pary would be a stake dance, however when you put people into situations or an option where they would be placed before that. they could mess up. but i agree the caliber of most students here at byu would find some other alternative source of entertainment other than drinking and all that pertains. spring break would be nice.
I definatly agree with having a spring break, if the party issue really is a problem I am very suprised. The only comment I do not like is the one about Martin Luther and Jesus...I agree we need a spring break, so we should have a week off atleast, but I love Dr. King and he definatly deserves this day off in his rememberance.
Although I can understand why BYU students would agree with you (good kairos), I think you should establish a better ethos. Why do you have the authority to ask for this time off? Maybe you should establish the fact that you are a hardworking student.
Also, although I would love a Spring Break, keep in mind the counter argument: not having a spring break or a long winter break allows our school to get out much earlier than other schools giving us the advantage in finding the best spring and summer jobs!
I don't think that we need a spring break. I think it would be nice, but I love getting out of school earlier in the spring because I can beat the other college students home to get first dibs on jobs!
This was very entertaining to read, although I would rather get out of school earlier then have a spring break.
In some ways a spring break would be great (and don’t get me wrong, I’d love one) however, in the long run, it is really nice to get out earlier. Having a few one-day breaks here and there isn’t that bad - it gives us a day to rejuvenate, sleep in and catch up with all of our work. It would be nice to have a few more though.
good call! I didn't even think of comparing it to Jesus! That really makes you think about the priorities and why we have which days off. You did a good job relating it to us as students here too!
I think the stigma of spring break is certainly one of the contributing factors to BYU’s unwillingness to give us one, but the other factor of wanting to allow the students an early end for the advantage with job hunting during the summer might be the real reason. Another possibility is the increased summer allows more classes to be held for spring and summer terms.
