Streets of Provo

I absolutely hate watching the evening news. It seems to me that there is never anything uplifting or inspiring about the news. This was made extremely apparent to me last week when I heard on the ten o’clock news that a young girl had been hit and killed by a driver while crossing University Avenue by the football stadium. This was devastatingly shocking to me because it hit so close to home. How easily could that have been me? Hearing this horrible news sent chills down my spine. It made me sick to hear that one of my fellow colleague’s lives was taken by simply crossing the street. This could have been any one of us students here at BYU. We are all guilty of crossing the crowded, dangerous streets of Provo, Utah. Doing so is the only way possible to get onto BYU campus. Not only is it scary to walk across these streets it is equally as scary to drive down them. I don’t know if you have ever driven down 800 North at night time, but it is just about as bad as driving with your eyes closed. I am constantly slamming on my brakes, barely missing the boy in the black coat that blended in perfectly with the night sky. Drivers are destine to eventually hit a pedestrian while pedestrians are putting their lives on the line every time they walk across this street. There are probably a total of 3 light posts along the whole street making this road way to dark for how frequently it is crossed. There are many solutions that could solve this fatal problem, and if it is not fixed pronto we are bound to witness many more innocent students’ deaths.

I completely agree with you! I live on 800 N. and drive down it at night a lot, I'm not sure if it the cross walk that makes the pedestrians feel invincible or something, but almost without fail I find myself braking suddenly when I go down this street.
