MLK and his use of a dream

Back in the 60’s racism was so very alive and prevalent in every facet of our American society. Martin Luther King Jr. was one man who the black community rallied behind because of his amazing ability to speak well in public. In the speech “I have a dream” MLK Jr. tries to convince America to end racism by using the idea of a dream where there is no racism in America.

The tool that Martin Luther King Jr. uses is the idea of a dream. He introduces his idea of a racist free world through the idea of a dream. This tool was used because everyone has dreams and it is something that is very easily related to. Also, America was founded on dreams which make the cause sound as important as the very American founding that that started this great nation. However, I think there is even something way more important than that and that thing is the American dream of becoming better than your fathers were and so it would mean being less racist. When you look at the definition of the word “Dream” it means a most desirable ideal and a vision of what might come if you work for it so the use of that word was ideal to make the people fall behind and support because of its abstract quality. It also was a great tool because it makes for a great war cry. The phrase “I have a Dream” can be said with so much passion and enthusiasm that it is perfect for the civil rights movement.

Using the abstract idea of a dream is a perfect tool to use in a speech that is all about doing something to change the future. It was obviously successful or I would not be writing this piece right now. I think it was one of the greatest speeches of all times and will be remembered for eternity.
