On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. organized one of the biggest and greatest marches and demonstrations we have ever seen here in the United States of America. He and the thousands of people marched that day in Washington DC. He gave a speech in front of the Lincoln memorial. The speech he gave was called “I have a dream.” This is one of the most famous speeches ever given in our time. It is so famous because of the purpose it stood for and because of its eloquent words and style. After the speech and the march, the Civil Rights act of 1964 was passed. This speech shows us today what difference one man can make in the lives of those that live in our country. Martin Luther King used many tools and precious metaphors in his speech we will analyze.
In his speech he says “We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.” This was very important in rallying the people in this march. Many people were angry and excited during this time period. He calls everyone in the march to act well behaved. He uses the choice of words “high plane of dignity” very uniquely. He says high plane to let them know that if you follow this advice then you will be better than those that don’t. He then uses the word dignity to show them that if they want dignity in return then they must show it first. He tells them not to use violence in this precious moment.
Martin Luther King was very careful in the way that he carried about the entire demonstration. He was very intelligent in the way that he lead the people. For this he will be remembered as one of the most incredible gentlemen in the history of this country.
