A Mormon - why does it matter?

Elder Russell M. Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve recently emphasized the political neutrality of the church in an interview on the Church Newsroom website. The presidential campaign of LDS member Mitt Romney has created several controversial opinions and views within the past year. We as members of the church and as students at BYU recognize the importance of fulfilling our duty and responsibility as citizens, to be informed of political issues within our country and throughout the world. It is also equally important to participate as citizens by voting in local and national elections. However, why do we really vote? The 2008 Presidential election will be the second time in history that a mormon has run for office. Many LDS members will be voting for Romney, but why? Is it because it is just easier for a Mormon to trust a Mormon? The fact that Mitt Romney is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will change the way many people vote, however it is imperative that we as members of this church and as BYU students participate politically for the right reasons, and vote for someone for their values, platform and professionalism rather than their religious beliefs. I am not voting for Mitt Romney because he is a Mormon, but because of his approach towards issues, his convictions and his impressive attitude. He embraces the challenges and criticism he faces and handles himself well under pressure. For these reasons and many more, I will vote for Romney.

AMEN! I completely agree! People definatly need to look at the issues before deciding to vote for Mitt just because he is a member of the church doesn't mean he is perfect for the job. What would happen if Harry Reed ran for President would people vote for him just because he is LDS too?

I agree that sometimes it is easier to vote for someone that you relate too, but I also think that it is important to vote for the person who you believe will be the best person for the job.

I love your essay it was well thought out and has a great point that should be brought to the attention of the BYU community. I would however maybe mention why you would possible vote for another candidate because of maybe one of their good platforms that you may back up. You know just to beat the opposition to the punch. Other than that I can think of nothing wrong with your article.

It could not be any better said; but this does not only go for those mormons, but also those NON mormons refusing to vote for Romney. He is a good leader, and his approaches towards government is what should be recognized, not his religion.
