Why not teach what you love?

Determining a career is possibly the most difficult decision that one has to make. The second most difficult thing to do is to choose an appropriate major that will allow him or her to fulfill their desired career path. Surprisingly this choice was easy for me. I plan on majoring in English Teaching and my goal is to teach English at the high school level.

While I was growing up books were my ultimate passion, I would spend my summers locked in my bedroom with my books and I would read, cover to cover, an average of 5 or 6 books. When I was in high school I had an amazing English teacher. She was an inspiration. She helped me to cultivate and refine my taste of literature, and she introduced me to new books that I would have never read on my own. After I graduated from high school I said to myself, 'I want to teach what I love; English'. My teacher inspired me. I love books, I love writing, I love the English language. I think that there is a beauty almost unsurpassed in this world, and that is the beauty of words.

English is my passion and it is my desire to spread my passion for books and learning to others as my teacher spread her love for teaching to me. I love to learn, I love books, I love working with youth. That is why English Teaching is the best major for me here at Brigham Young University.

You mentioned a very crucial point in helping others decide a major to pursue. You obviously have an intense passion for words, both written and read, and that along with the outside motivation of your teacher, inspired you to pursue English and eventually teaching it to students. Congratulations because I've seen many times that people think the understand what it means to have a passion about something. But the difference between you and them is they seek to gain a passion in their chosen area. You, on the better hand, are choosing a major on the passion that you've gained. Good luck.
