Throughout the history of the United States, there have been many events that have sparked change: the Revolutionary War, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the writing of the Constitution, the Civil War, and many more. However, the biggest event in the history of the United States came on August 28, 1963. On this day, Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech that put events into motion that would eventually lead to the freedom of the black man. In the speech, Martin Luther King Jr. tried to convince the citizens of the United States to end the oppression of the black people by using many repetitious phrases.
Dr. King, just like many Americans, dreamt of a better tomorrow. He dreamt of a day when whites and blacks would be able to drink from the same water fountain. He dreamt of a day when black people would be able to sit next to a white person on the bus, when a black man would be able to work in the same office as a white man, when the black race would be free. Throughout his speech Dr. King used the phrase “I have a Dream” to convey to the American people that he was just like them, he had dreams of a better world as well. Dr. King was trying to establish himself as someone the people could trust, someone just like them. He was trying to explain that he was just like them and that he wanted the same things they did: to be able to have a good life, to be able to have liberty and to be allowed to pursue happiness. He wanted a better world for his children to grow up in.
Dr. King’s use of the repetitious phrase “I have a Dream” was extremely effective. It allowed him to get into the hearts and minds of the American people and convince them that he was just like them. He wanted the same things they wanted and he wasn’t going to take no for an answer. Dr. King lives on in the hearts of every man and women today because of the great things he accomplished while he was alive on the earth.
