with racial tensions still present strongly in the south and throughout the rest of the united states, something had to be done about it. segregation still ruled much of south east, someone did do something about it, and that man was martin Luther King Jr. With his rhetoric and vigor, he was able to speak directly to white men as well as black. he used an appeal to such voices as President Lincoln and a common phrase to the bible.
Martin Luther first made an appeal to Lincoln using much of the same language of the famous speech, the Gettysburg address, made by one of our countries most famous presidents. President Lincoln, this showed many white intelectuals that Mr. King was very inteligent and Knew much about our Country, this also appealed to black people across the nation, for they looked upon Lincoln as heaven sent. by using similar rhetoric and making references to Lincoln he was able to bridge gaps that otherwise would have been impossible, Mr. King also used strong phrases such as being bound by chains and other references that can be related to the bible. He did this to relate to those who read and used the bible. Our countries forefathers founded this nation with a very strong religious emphasis, veiwing that they were doing gods work. and that this nation was founded by God. with that in mind the nation was predominantly Christian, and by using words that the bible uses would appeal to them as well.
