Bad:
BYU is a great university. BYU has lots of programs for students. There are lots of ways to be more spiritually and intellectually educated. There is one fault with the system of GE’s. There must be a requirement set for students to take PE classes. This will help them gain better health. Lots of students are going to lose weight and build more muscles. We all know that we have a great privilege to have a body. We must exercise so that your bodies are in good physical condition. Many of us have our own excuses on how not to work out. These excuses are insignificant, when compared to the benefits of a healthy body. BYU has spent several millions of dollars to make physical education buildings and buy equipment. We must respect that and use it. It’s in our best interests to do so.
Along with the essential physical benefits, a workout program also has lots of moral pluses. One who has a will to maintain a healthy body will also succeed in other things. One of them is education. The moral willingness to study harder and more effectively will rise as a result of maintaining a physically fit body. Students will also do better in the spiritual sense. The increased moral willingness is going to help them study the scriptures more. And also, many more things that others just do not seem to want to do. Physical work is hard. But the benefits are beneficial in many ways.
Good:
BYU holds a well-respected ranking among many well-known organizations. So many people have achieved high successes because of the university’s help. Attending this institution is a dream to many, but reality to few. The different colleges within the university prepare the students for the future, while the General Education program has some flaws in it. One, that is most critical at this moment, is the lack of the requirements to take physical activity classes; one can graduate without ever having to take any class that involves physical activity or sports. The Department of Undergraduate Education should consider making all students, excluding disabled, to take a physical activity class in order to fulfill the graduation requirements.
Physical activity is essential for our health; we must realize all the benefits that come with it. Besides the obvious health rewards, one will also be able to develop a deeper moral strength in accomplishing other tasks of life with greater ease. An example of that would be the learning capabilities, spiritual improvements, and any other activities that are difficult to do. One can study for a test longer and better and serve better in the church because one will have a habit of accomplishing difficult things (like working out) and getting great benefits. We are given a great privilege to have a body, so taking good care of it, is common sense. Of course, all of us know that physical activity is only beneficial to our bodies, when applied in moderation. BYU has put lots of time and effort in the sports equipment and buildings on campus; many students just do not understand how doing physical activity improves so many other aspects of their lives. In order to get education at BYU to the fullest degree, the General Education Program must have a requirement for everyone to participate in physical activity.
