Spring Break-preventing the bad?

Bad

Many people will say that the reason we don’t have a spring break is because it’s a decision that comes straight from the General Authorities. Even though this may be true, it doesn’t mean that is something permanent. Take the issue on shorts for example. Some years ago there was also a policy that was set by the First Presidency and other General Authorities about students not wearing shorts at the BYU campus. Obviously the times changed and this issue for some reason or another was reevaluated and now we are able to wear shorts. Just as circumstances for the dress code led to the change in policy, I think the time is quickly approaching for the spring break issue to be reconsidered and changed. There is a very big difference in between revelation, scriptures, and prophecy and between policies. Scriptures and these things have eternal principles—policies are based on circumstances and are always subject to change. Seeing as how this is true, the time for the spring break policy to be taken back into consideration is close at hand.

The two words “spring break” definitely have a connotation that is not very well looked upon in the eyes of members of the church. The words usually bring to mind places like Cancun or ideas of all night parties. As members of the church we have been raised and taught to abstain from alcohol, drugs and other things that are associated with “spring break”. A great majority of BYU students are members of the church are considered to be adults, old enough to make responsible decisions. Some doubts have been brought up that if there were a spring break then students from BYU would end up in Cancun party videos or something of the sort. Do authorities here not have enough trust and faith that we can properly apply the teachings that have been with us since we can remember? Even without a spring break, people who choose to take part in these practices are going to end up doing them anyway. Why should everyone be restricted from a few more days to rest just to try to prevent something that is going to happen anyway?

Good
