To eat or not to eat. That is the question.

Bad:

Lactose intolerance is generally the term that is used when attributing to the decline in the level of an enzyme, lactase, in the body. The enzyme generally occurs naturally, but over time it begins to dissipate within the body. Because of this the dairy industry has created many options for those people who suffer from lactose intolerance. For example there are many different kinds of dairy-free milk, and there is dairy-free sour cream substitute as well as dairy-free ice creams. In addition to the many lactose-free milk based products there are plant based products that are the only products guaranteed to be completely lactose-free. Many of these products include, soy milk and rice milk. They are the most common. Almond milk, oat milk, hemp milk, and peanut milk. There are conventional dairy products as well as products where lactose is used as an additive. There are many different ways to state when foods have lactose in it lactoserum, whey, milk solids, and modified milk ingredients. Many times the lactose is added to foods because it is supposed to add flavor and texture. There are many foods that contain lactose. Some you wouldn't suspect such as certain hot dogs, sausages, margarines, breads, cereal, and even dried fruit. It is really surprising how many common food items have lactose that either occurs naturally or that is added for a commercial purpose. Despite the many foods that contains lactose there is still an abundance of foods that are safe for those with lactose intolerance to eat.

There are many options that the Twilight Zone could adopt. They could get soy milk. Or lactose-free milk. There are cereal options, but no milk that can be had. They could make sandwiches with no cheese. There are soy cheese options that could also be used. There is soy string cheese. Also, there are frozen dinners that have no cheese. I know that there is one frozen dinner option at the cougar eat and that is sweet and sour chicken. The Twilight Zone could get more options like that. Also there are new personal meals by Hormel. They are called Compleats. There are many options such as roast beef and mashed potatoes, turkey and dressing, sweet and sour chicken, chicken pot pies. Other things that the cougar eat could get would be pasta. Most pastas available have cheese, but there are a select few with no cheese. The twilight zone does a good job keeping BYU students well fed—for the most part that is. There are options at BYU in the cougar eat with food that doesn't have cheese, but the Twilight Zone is fast, and that, many times is what is needed for the typical busy College Student. There are many food items with “hidden” dairy, which can make choosing a safe food even more difficult. Many of the foods with hidden dairy you wouldn't expect. Despite the difficulty there are dairy-free options available and it is only fair that the BYU student and Faculty population should have the options available to them.

Good:

Many of the foods that contain the “hidden” lactose are foods you wouldn't expect to have any. Despite the difficulty there are dairy-free, lactose-free options available. It is only fair that the BYU student and Faculty population should have the non-dairy options available to them. There are many options that the Twilight Zone could adopt. For example, in addition to the creamery milk BYU Twilight Zone could also get either lactose-free milk or the more popular soy milk. This would help with the breakfast issue, the Twilight Zone offers cereal and with the lactose-free options those with lactose intolerance could have cereal as a viable option for breakfast. Going to the Twilight Zone is fast way to get much needed nourishment throughout the day, and that, many times is what is needed for the typical busy College Student. However come lunch time when I need to eat I go to the Twilight Zone and it takes me a while to find some available food options. There are pre-made sandwiches and yet they all have cheese, I think that there should be some sandwich options with no cheese. The salads in the Twilight Zone also have cheese mixed in with the lettuce, meat, and olives, there should be options for salads with no cheese as well. However, if cheese must be included on the sandwiches that are provided for BYU students at the Twilight Zone there are soy cheese options that could also be used. There are many different varieties of cheese made from soy. In addition to the sliced cheese there is a soy string cheese product that is available. Overall, the twilight zone does a good job keeping BYU students well fed—for the most part that is.
